Feed a Cold, Starve a Fever

Last week, I wasn’t feeling the greatest and just chalked it up to the crazy weather or maybe allergies. This weekend I was non-stop with two kid’s birthday parties (Friday evening & Saturday afternoon) Happy Birthday Morgan and Lil Ginger Bob. Also, Banana Bob had a friend over Saturday night, plus normal weekend chores of cleaning and grocery shopping and then my family celebrated Easter early on Sunday.  Oh, and I had to go to Timmy’s (my dad) and fix his tv for the 5th time. It was a lot of going and no resting.

So, when I was going to bed last night, I was feeling icky…you know that feeling like your throat isn’t right, your head is feeling like it’s going to blow up and detach from your neck and then your ears shut down and in my case start ringing at a higher octave, like Mariah Carey’s whistle note.  So, while I was sitting in the studio today…still a little icky, the saying “Feed a cold, starve a fever” popped into my head. Why do we say that and is it true?

So, I googled it! Supposedly, it has been first noted in a 1574 dictionary because that seems logical. Maybe the dictionary back then defined sayings and not just words?? I mean the internet says medical journals weren’t established till the 18th century, so the dictionary was probably the only source back then? Either way, through all of my internet research which last about 10 minutes, it says by eating food may help the body generate warmth during a “cold” and that avoiding food may help it cool down when overheated. But, that is not true anymore! I found that even WebMD says you should not starve for a fever or anything.

Now after all these years of saying “Feed a Cold, Starve a Fever” we are now going to be saying “Feed a Cold, Feed a Fever”.

The more you know…just EAT IT!
