The Phillies are off to an 0-4 start, and I’m just waiting for some wiseguy to start lipping off to me about it. If they do, I’ll politely remind that person that I’m not a member of the team, and therefore bear no personal responsibility for the losing (if I were on the team, they would be even worse, rest assured.) And you won’t hear me refer to the team as “we” for that very reason. I might mention “our guys” but that’s it. It really annoys me when fans try to talk about “we” when it comes to sports. You know what I mean? It’s like, yo it’s not us. It’s never been us. Of course I’m happy when my teams win, but as a pragmatic person I understand that losses happen. You gotta have perspective. You ever think about those guys (and it’s always guys) who destroy their TVs after a loss? For some reason (New York Football) Giants fans seem particularly prone to this. Imagine that Best Buy run. “I need a TV immediately. It’s an emergency. Feel free to give me the worst deal possible.”
That person definitely needs a reminder: It’s not us.
