Rihanna has been announced as the headline performer at the Super Bowl, and as happens every year when the announcement is made, a lot of people are disgruntled about it. One recurrent thing that I keep hearing is that the producers should get some rock bands in there (Maroon 5 doesn’t count, brah).
I’ve said before, and it’s not a particularly popular opinion, but I strongly believe that the reason they don’t book rock bands is because it’s less a musical performance and more a spectacle, and pop acts simply do spectacle better than rock bands. I’m speaking generally here, there are exceptions. But take for example when Lady Gaga flew in from the top of the stadium. Can you imagine a rock band doing that?
Personally I think Rihanna will do great, but as I pointed out I won’t see much of it anyway. Halftime for me is for a run to the bathroom and a visit to the kitchen to reload my plate.
