Today’s Question of the day:
It came from a simple, albeit somewhat moldy, rock expression: if it’s too loud, you’re too old. I understand the sentiment, and I do realize it’s a figure of speech, but this has always bothered me. I played in bands for close to 15 years, and as a drummer I took a lesson from John Densmore of the Doors, who revealed in his book Riders on the Storm that he always had his drums set up behind the amp line to protect his hearing. I started doing the same thing way back in the basement, and continued when we played out, sometimes to the annoyance of certain sound men. But it worked; a lot of musicians I know who are my contemporaries suffer from some degree of hearing loss. I don’t.
Bottom line: for me, anyway, it doesn’t have to be loud, it just has to be clear.
