I saw this today and I might have to add going to Oregon to my bucket list. When you think of a sports bar, it always has a masculinity feel with majority of the television playing Major League Baseball, Hockey, the NFL…manly sports which would favor to the majority since 96% of athletes on tv are men. Tomorrow, a new bar is opening called The Sports Bra and it is not an April Fool’s joke. The owner, chef, and former basketball player, Jenny Nguyen is supporting women just as a sports bra does. The idea for The Sports Bra came out of the experience playing sports, but not having that opportunity to watch women on television, so now she created her dream spot. A bar that always plays women’s sports without asking, the sound up loud, and where you can have a “girls” night out and cheer and celebrate your favorite player/team.
On top of that, she will be getting the food and beverages from as many women-owned companies as possible. Also, the table for her bar are coming from a group called Girls Build which teaches young girls woodworking. Nguyen wants to show local girls that there is a future for them in pro sports. She wants to change the perception that women’s sports can’t make money. She wants to encourage the young women who might quit doing something they love because they don’t see a path forward. But, she not done there. She also wants to see equal pay and basically change the whole broken system.
