I knowingly opened a can of worms this morning by revisiting the cover song conversation for the question of the day. And I was not disappointed, although the conversation was somewhat tilted this time, since the question was, “what’s your favorite cover song?” thereby neatly sidestepping a lot of the overt negativity that came up when this topic emerged spontaneously the first time.
So why did I go back to it? Curiosity, mostly. I wanted to find out whether the popular opinions would be the same this time around. For the most part they were. Metallica came up a number of times, as did Five Finger Death Punch, which wasn’t surprising, since both of these bands have recorded more than a few covers. In the case of FFDP they’ve released several covers that have become notable hits. In the case of Metallica, they did an entire double album of covers, which constitutes around 10% of their total recorded output, which is kind of staggering if you think about it.
Anyway, I digress. The discussion was interesting. The good ones will launch me into unexpected territory and suggest things that turn out to be cool. But there’s never a dull moment. Cheers.
