Who’s Got My Back? And can they please return it?

How can you tell when something is abnormal, health-wise? I ask because for the last two weeks I’ve woken up every day feeling like a mule kicked me in the lower back. The people I know with whom I’ve spoken about it have been no help: “Ahhh you’re just getting old.”

Gee, thanks.

I know unexplained pains are something that happens once you reach a certain age, but does it really happen that way, like all at once? There’s a lump there at the bottom edge of my ribcage on the left side of my back. It’s been that way for years. I think it happened when I got pneumonia the last time. I coughed so hard and long that the muscles on that side pulled away from the bone. Let me tell you, brah, that hurt. Like, a lot. It got bad enough that I had to brace my back against the wall just to cough, and since I had pneumonia, I was coughing frequently. And it was the middle of winter and I was living in a house with no heat. Long story. I got better eventually and the pain in my back subsided. For about seven years. Then I noticed this bump and on occasion it would become painful in that spot.

I don’t know. It’s annoying though. I know that much. Today it’s been pretty bad. It’s uncomfortable to sit. I’m okay to stand and walk. But sitting for a long period of time is tough. Yesterday during commercial breaks in the Super Bowl I would lie down on my hard living room floor for ten minutes at a time, which helped some. I need a heating pad. That is high on my to-do list for tomorrow.

OK, enough of me complaining. Tomorrow I’ll be back to sarcasm and weirdness. Cheers.
